Education for Health Professionals
This section provides learning modules and links to other useful resources on therapeutics to help improve patient safety.
AzCERT Resources
- Overview of Drug-induced Long QT Syndrome: Discussion of the long QT syndrome and its associated life-threatening arrhythmia, Torsades de Pointes, can become somewhat esoteric, even for cardiologists. It is, however, an important syndrome for all physicians and health-care providers to be able to recognize and manage, because it can occur as a life-threatening side effect of so many medications.
- Medications that Interact with Methadone: An overview of methadone's potential to interact with other medications.
- Causal Diagram of Conditions Leading to Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) in Outpatient Settings: Interactive diagram shows complex network of causes for ADEs from the patient's perspective. Includes evidence summaries. For use as a tool for education or research. View the journal article describing how the causal diagram was created. Click here to view Causal Diagram
- Herbal Remedies Information: Downloadable pocket cards for clinicians showing evidence for effectiveness and potential drug interactions for Hispanic and commercial herbal remedies. This section also features a searchable list of Hispanic herbal remedies used in the southwestern US.
- AzCERT publications
Pharmacogenetics:
AzCERT and the American Medical Association (AMA) developed educational brochures for clinicians on how genetic variations can affect a patient's response to medications. Both brochures were reviewed by professional organizations and FDA scientists.
- Personalized health care report 2008: Warfarin and Genetic Testing - discusses the gene variants that affect warfarin dosing.
- Pharmacogenomics: Increasing the safety and effectiveness of drug therapy - includes case-based studies with abacavir (Ziagen), clopidogrel (Plavix), codeine, and warfarin.

Other Education Resources:
- Cytochrome P450 Drug Interaction Table
A current, detailed, referenced list for research purposes maintained by David A. Flockhart, MD, PhD of Indiana University School of Medicine. - The Inherited Long QT Syndrome
A slide presentation by Arthur Moss, MD and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Research and Education Foundation (CARE). - Knowledge Objectives in Medical Pharmacology
The Association for Medical School Pharmacology has made the Knowledge Objectives (3rd edition, 2002) available for download as a PDF file on their website. The document describes the minimum essential knowledge in Pharmacology which should be taught to and mastered by medical students. Of special interest is the chapter on Clinical Pharmacology.
